Wei Jianguo Meets with Carlos Gutierrez

On the afternoon of May 13, 2010, Wei Jianguo, Secretary General of CCIEE, met with Carols Gutierrez, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who was accompanied by the delegation of APCO Worldwide.

APCO is a global consulting firm, which was founded in 1984 and with its headquarter in Washington, D.C., and specializes in public relations, communication and business consulting for major multinationals. Ms. Margery Kraus is the founder and CEO of APCO, and Mr. Gutierrez joined APCO as a consultant after he retired from the U.S. government.   

Mr. Wei briefed the guests on the research, international exchanges and consulting work CCIEE has done since it was established one year ago and recalled the contribution Mr. Gutierrez has made to the intergovernmental exchanges and corporate cooperation between China and the U.S. during his tenure as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Besides, Mr. Wei also introduced the Magazine “Globalization” which CCIEE is preparing to launch and invited Mr. Gutierrez to be the article contributor. Finally, Mr. Wei hoped to have further discussion with APCO regarding exchanges between think tanks and corporations between China and the U.S.

The delegation was led by Mr. Gutierrez and Ms. Kraus who are very keen on cooperating with CCIEE. They briefly introduced the personnel of APCO, including more than 30 influential former politicians, entrepreneurs and scholars such as the former Presidents of Ghana and Poland, former U.S. ambassador to China James Sasser, former Commerce Minister of Mexico. APCO has 29 offices in major business, financial, media capitals around the world.

In particular, Mr. Gutierrez congratulated China on its economic achievements in the past decades and is proud of China. This has been his first visit to China since his retirement from the U.S. government. Together with other influential colleagues of APCO, they offer excellent services to governments, corporations and other clients globally. Ms. Kraus expressed her willingness to form a partnership with CCIEE and offer high-end consulting services to help Chinese enterprises going abroad. Chinese firms will have huge potential for development for the next ten years and thus, she hoped that CCIEE could bridge APCO with Chinese firms that have the needs of going abroad. Ms. Kraus is also the Chairman of the Board of the Women Presidents’ Organization. This September, she will lead a group of women entrepreneurs visiting China and look forward to further cooperation.   

At present, APCO and the Consulting Department of CCIEE have started cooperation in the China Enterprises going abroad Training Program and they would like to extend cooperation in other fields as well, including establishing long-term strategic cooperation.

Also attended the meeting were Kenneth Jarrett and Vice Chairman, Ou Huarong, Senior Vice President of APCO, Greater China, Cai Xiaofeng, Niu Tiehang, Tang Lin, Li Sai of CCIEE.
