The Eighth China-U.S. CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue was held in Washington D.C on May 18 and 19. Mr. Zeng Peiyan, Chairman of CCIEE and Mr. Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO of U.S. Chamber of Commerce attended the dialogue with over 30 representatives from both sides. The delegates to the dialogue conducted candid discussions on the economic situation of the U.S. and China, bilateral trade and investment, China market-economy status, macroeconomic policy coordination, industry and infrastructure cooperation, the RMB’s growing role in the global economy. The dialogue ended with a number of constructive proposals.

The Chinese representatives pointed out that the current relation of China-U.S. was basically stable, but risks should not be ignored. The two sides should manage differences, create favorable conditions for bilateral economic and trade cooperation. It is crucial to clarify the misunderstanding of globalization, objectively make foreign policy, and solve trade disputes according to the WTO rules. It is also essential to work together to achieve a win-win situation through affirmative action and accumulated mutual trust.

A Joint Statement was issued after the dialogue, which suggested the two governments should work closely to promote global economic growth, take measures to enhance bilateral economic and trade relations, coordinate their macroeconomic policies, conclude the bilateral investment treaty negotiations as soon as possible and strengthen dialogue of Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partners (RCEP). Both sides oppose trade and investment protectionism and will enforce intellectual property protections, promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of technology innovation, the “Belt and Road”, development of third-party market, sustainable development, health and medicine.

The China-U.S. CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue is organized by China Center for International Economic Exchanges and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, known as the China-U.S. Track II economic dialogue. The dialogue aims to strengthen the economic communication between the two countries, promote trade and economic cooperation, provide policy advice to the governments, and inject positive energy to the development of bilateral relations.
