On the afternoon of 23 September 2016, Vice Chief Economist Xu Hongcai met with Prof. Sebastian Heilmann, President of Mercator Institute for China Studies at CCIEE.

The two sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including China’s economy, RMB’s internationalization and China-Europe business and financial cooperation. Mr. Xu Hongcai noted that since the beginning of this year, China’s reform in various fields has made good progress while structural adjustment continues to move forward. The launch of RMB clearing bank services by the Bank of China’s New York Branch is a landmark event, which has reflected the increasing demand for RMB in the global community. It is also an opportunity for Europe to play a greater role in the internationalization of RMB.

The two sides also discussed the impact of Brexit and the European refugee crisis, Germany’s rotating presidency of the G20 next year and other international hotspot issues, and expressed the hope that the two sides will increase exchanges and cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
