On May 22, 2017, CCIEE held the 95th Monthly Economic Talk under the theme of Policy Changes after Trump Takes Office and How to Respond to them? Zhang Xiaoqiang, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of CCIEE presided over the meeting. Ruan Zongze, Executive Vice President of China Institute of International Studies, Chen Wenling, Chief Economist and Deputy Director of CCIEE Executive Board, and Zhou Shijian, Senior Fellow at the Tsinghua Center for US-China Relations delivered their speeches respectively.

Ruan Zongze pointed out that the Trump administration pursues polarized politics in terms of domestic policies. As for foreign policies, the administration has showed a swing attitude. Recently, he sent a delegate to take part in the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and changed his attitude towards the AIIB (Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank), indicating that the US-China relationship is moving from uncertainty to a positive and solid direction. Nonetheless, China also needs to be prepared for any possible challenges.

Chen Wenling noted that Trump is a straightforward politician, the interaction between the US and China can walk out the Thucydides trap. She stressed that the US and China have a lot of common interest in infrastructure construction and the development of the Belt and the Road. So long as the US and China can think correctly, share a beautiful vision and implement practical actions, then the US-China relations will be able to develop in the positive direction.

By analyzing the US development and US-China economic and trade cooperation according to trump’s economic policies, Zhou Shijian believes that Trump administration is pragmatic and focuses on actual benefits. Despite the economic and trade frictions between the US and China, the US-China economic and trade relations are likely to experience significant development because the US wants to revitalize its economy, and it needs China to achieve that goal.

In the Q&A section, experts answered various questions from the media and audience. Researchers from CCIEE, representatives from enterprises, research institutions and news agencies took part in the event.
