Invited by the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization, Wei Jianguo, Vice Chairman of CCIEE, and former Vice Minister of Commerce, delivered a keynote speech at the 2017 Global Energy Interconnection Forum in the morning of 26 September, 2017.

Wei Jianguo pointed out that energy will play a key role in the future development of globalization. With extensive experience in smart grid technologies and the concept of global development, China is bound to lead the global energy revolution in the future. The proposal and implementation of the global energy interconnection have made great achievement and received support from a wide range of countries and regions. At the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, held in Beijing a few months ago, China’s president Xi Jinping proposed the concepts of “Great Economic Integration, Great Industrial Linkage, and Outcome-sharing”, which should guide the promotion of global energy development.

Wei Jianguo suggested that the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization should strengthen cooperation with the United Nations and obtain a consultative status with the United Nations so as to improve its position and play a more important role in coordinating trans-national grid connectivity. Furthermore, the organization should establish an international fund to provide the global energy interconnection with an effective funding mechanism. Last but not least, the organization could create an international think tank to conduct researches in certain areas, especially the building of the belt and road.

The forum is hosted by the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization and representatives from more than 300 Chinese and international governmental departments and industrial associations gathered together to share their views and make recommendations for the global energy interconnection initiative, transform the world into a green and low-carbon economy as well as sustainable development.
