On November 17th, 2010, the 2010 High-End Economic Forum & 3rd Overseas Chinese Entrepreneur Forum was jointly hosted by All China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Federation of Hong Kong Associations of Returned Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong China Chamber of Commerce and China Federation of Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Zeng Peiyan, Chairman of CCIEE, delivered a keynote speech entitled Transforming China’s Economic Development Mode: Opportunities and Challenges, at the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Mr. Zeng pointed out, the current world economy is recovering slowly but the economic growth is unbalanced across different countries. Therefore, all the countries need to work together in order to walk out of the shadow of the international financial crisis. So far, China’s measures designed to expanding domestic demands and boosting economic growth have achieved significant results. Also, China has become the fastest-growing emerging economy in the world. We have both the confidence and capability to maintain such growth trend in the long term. Meanwhile, we need to be aware of the international financial crisis’ impact on China. Apparently, such impact is a shock to the speed of economic growth but actually, it is a shock to the economic development mode. Thus, accelerating the transformation of China’s economic development mode has become an urgent strategy for China’s economic development. Mr. Zeng emphasized the acceleration of economic development mode transformation will be the focus of China’s economic development during the 12th Five-Year Program period. And the following principles need to be well implemented during the period: the first one is to stress development, the second one is to achieve balanced development, the third one is to promote innovation and reform, the fourth one is to lay stress on green development, the fifth one is to adhere to opening-up and the last one is to promote harmony.

Mr. Zeng fully affirmed Hong Kong’s development in recent years and expressed his confidence in its future. He believed that the economic development mode transformation made in the mainland of China will help transform the island’s economy. Hong Kong is facing new challenges but also new historical opportunities and it will definitely gain more room for development. He said that many overseas Chinese entrepreneurs have made extraordinary achievements after tenacious endeavour. They have also made important contributions to China’s reform and opening-up and modernization. Their dreams are closely related with China’s destiny; their businesses are also associated with China’s development. Mr. Zeng believed that most of the overseas Chinese entrepreneurs will make further contribution to China’s great rejuvenation.
