On October 8, China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) and Bruegel, a Brussels-based economic think tank, held a webinar themed “WTO reform in the eyes of the EU and China: How close are they?”, during which experts from both sides conducted in-depth discussions on relevant issues.

It was generally agreed by the experts present that WTO reform is a must-to-do which should not only cover common issues like transparency, dispute settlement mechanism, subsidies for fishery and industry, and treatment of developing countries, but also pay attention to trade and emerging industries such as digital economy. The two sides reached consensus that the reform should be done on the basis of multilateralism, de-politicization and inclusiveness, and bring up more cooperation and dialogues. Only with a cooperative, open, inclusive and sharing attitude, can countries achieve collaboration in WTO reform as much as possible while maintaining differences, and can the reform harvest fruitful outcomes.

Attending the exchanges included Zhang Yansheng, Principal Researcher of CCIEE, Zhang Monan, Principal Researcher of CCIEE’s Institute of American and European Studies, Tanjun, Assistant Researcher of CCIEE’s Institute of American and European Studies, Xu Chanchun, Research Fellow of CCIEE’s World Economy Studies Department, André Sapir and Alicia Garcia Herrero, Senior Research Fellows of Bruegel and Niclas Frederic Poitiers, Research Fellows of Bruegel.
