CCIEE Participates in 2009 China Forum on Urban Development

  • Time:2009-07-19
On July 19, 2009, Secretary-General of CCIEE, Wei Jianguo, and his deputy Zhang Xiaochong, attended 2009 China Forum on Urban Development & the 2nd Expo on Urban Planning and Construction in Hebei Province. CCIEE is a strong supporter of this forum.
In his remarks at the forum, Wei pointed out that China's urban development is at a critical juncture and that sustainable urbanization will largely depend on the performance of China's economy in the next couple of decades. In order to maintain fast economic growth and to implement the transition from an exports/investment-led economy to one driven by domestic demand, urbanization must be speeded up in order to promote economic and social development. Due to China's enormous population, weak economic foundation, and imbalanced development, urbanization faces challenges such as limited resources, endangered environment, and glaring regional disparities. As a result, Wei concluded, we must follow the Scientific Outlook of Development and develop a model of urbanization with Chinese characteristics.
During the forum, the Governor of Hebei Province, Hu Chunhua, met with Wei and Zhang. Vice-Governor Song Enhua also accompanied Wei and Zhang on a visit to the 2nd Expo on Urban Planning and Construction in Hebei Province. Wei said that CCIEE will strengthen cooperation with Hebei Province by providing critical information, human resources as well as research support that will facilitate the province's industrial restructuring. The Forum and the Expo are among the specific measures adopted by the provincial government to achieve the important policy goal of "Major Urban Changes Every Three Years."
