New Zealand's Ambassador for Climate Change Visits CCIEE

  • Time:2010-04-26

On February 3, 2010, Adrian Macey, New Zealand's Ambassador for Climate Change, visited CCIEE. Wei Jianguo, Secretary General of CCIEE, welcomed Macey and his colleagues. Also at the meeting were Xu Chaoyou, Deputy Director of the Department of External Affairs of CCIEE, and Si'alei Van Toor, First Secretary of New Zealand's Embassy in Beijing.

Wei welcomed Ambassador Macey's visit and gave a brief introduction of CCIEE, such as its scope of business, functions and characteristics. Macey said that despite the final Copenhagen agreement that has been reached after enormous efforts, it is extremely difficult to achieve the emission reduction targets laid out in the agreement, adding that major countries should work toward promoting climate change negotiations through bilateral and multilateral talks and research symposiums seminars. He said that New Zealand is willing to conduct exchanges and cooperation with China in this area. Wei reiterated China's policy stance toward climate change, pointing out that though the Copenhagen conference achieved some successes, the performance of developed countries fell short of the expectation of the international community. He called on all countries to work together on the basis of "common but differentiated responsibilities," in order for the Bonn Conference and the Mexico Conference to achieve positive results. Meanwhile, Wei also hoped to establish exchanges and cooperation with research institutions of New Zealand.
