CCIEE Chairman Zeng Peiyan Meets With Former US President Jimmy Carter
On December 9, 2011, Zeng Peiyan, Chairman of CCIEE met with Jimmy Carter, former US president at Zhongnanhai, Beijing. Also at the meeting were Mrs. Rosalynn Carter, former US First Lady, John Hardman, President and CEO of the US Carter Center, Liu Yawei, director of the China Program at Carter Center, Wei Jianguo, Secretary General and Chen Wenling, Chief Economist of CCIEE.

Zeng Peiyan extended his welcome to President Carter and his colleagues, spoke highly of President Carter’s works in promoting US-China friendship during his presidential term and Carter center’s effort in facilitating progress of the international community. Moreover, Chairman Zeng Peiyan introduced CCIEE’s background and main works, including researches about world economic imbalance, international monetary reform and US-China economic and trade strategic cooperation.
Mr. Carter appreciated Mr. Zeng for the meeting and praised China for setting a good example in its economic development and fiscal management. He said that China’s development bring benefits to African and Latin American nations. He visited some of the China-aided projects in African and was very impressed. He noted that the world need to know China-aided projects in Africa and the international community needs more participation from China. Finally, Mr. Carter introduced the works Cater Center has done in the aspects of conflict reconciliation, election supervision, poverty alleviation and disease treatment over the past twenty years. He hoped to discuss with CCIEE about cooperation in disease prevention and treatment in Africa and Latin America.
Mr. Zeng said CCIEE focuses on macroeconomic researches while Carter Center focuses on social health and education, however, they both are promoting social progress. The two organizations can discuss possible cooperation in the future. Mr. Wei Jianguo introduced China-Africa cooperation in the recent years, including trade, investment, aid to Africa, debts reductions and write-off and so on.
