The Fifth “Cities of the Future: Urban Sustainability in Modern China” Seminar is Held in Beijing

On 23 October 2015, CCIEE and the Paulson Institute held the fifth “Cities of the Future: Urban Sustainability in Modern China” seminar in Beijing. The theme of the seminar is sustainability, focal point of China’s economic restructuring. Proceeding from the overall perspective of China, the seminar focuses on the specific energy challenges and potential solutions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (Jing-Jin-Ji). It is significant for China’s economic transition and China-US economic and trade relationship. CCIEE Chairman Zheng Peiyan, Chairman of the Paulson Institute Henry M. Paulson and CCIEE Executive Vice Chairman Zhang Xiaoqiang attended the seminar and gave speeches
The Chinese participants pointed that three important aspects should be considered in regard to the activity of china’s sustainability. Firstly, the sustainable development should be regarded as the essential requirements of china economic transition. Take Environmental control and protection as a key part and focuse on solving outstanding issues such as smog and sewage. Secondly, sustainability should be used as an important indicator for poverty alleviation and development, and both aggregate and cost, income, environment and people's livelihood should be valued. Thirdly, Jing-Jin-Ji region as a pilot should take the lead in achieving tangible results in sustainability. The region should take air pollution control and environmental improvement as a breakthrough and jointly focus on ecological environment development and protection.
The seminar opened respective panel for CEOs, Jing-Jin-Ji government officials and experts. Government officials from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and experts and scholars from energy enterprises and field focused their discussions on such topics as commercial investment and collaboration in sustainability field, challenges and opportunities in Jing –Jin-Ji’s transition, carbon reduction and sustainability promotion, clean and renewable energy development, and energy efficiency and energy saving in building sector.
Prior to the seminar, Vice Premier Wang Yang met with Mr. Henry Paulson and some other U.S. representatives.
