High-Level Policy Forum on Global Governance Held in Beijing

The High-Level Policy Forum on Global Governance, co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) and China Center for International Economic Exchanges(CCIEE),was held in Beijing on December 17, 2012. The guest participants had in-depth discussions on topics like global governance mechanism reform and effective ways of promoting global development. Zeng Peiyan, Chairman of CCIEE, and Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator, addressed the opening ceremony.

Chairman Zeng pointed out that lasting peace, development and cooperation will continue to be the overarching themes of the 21st century, and world multi-polarization and economic globalization have developed further over the past years. Although great achievements have been made so far, a lot of problems are yet to be resolved. The gap between the north and the south is still enlarging and the development of different regions remains deeply imbalanced. Worldwide, regional turmoil abound, the price of bulk commodities fluctuates violently and the financial sector is still in disorder. Therefore, effective mechanisms are needed to address the root causes of these problems.

Furthermore, Chairman Zeng Peipan believes that the development of developing countries, especially that of low-income ones, is the key to building a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious world. Therefore, the interests and appeals of developing countries should be taken into full account when formulating different institutions. Global governance is a huge and profound undertaking. It involves the interests of different governments, international organizations, institutions, enterprises and individuals. Therefore, a complete overhaul of the current global governance system has become rather difficult. Governments and politicians should have great faith, wisdom and courage to take up their responsibilities, rise above the differences and strive to make substantial and constructive progress.

As the impacts of the international financial crisis and the European debt crisis are still lingering, the delegates called for in-depth researches on global governance and in particular, its defects. They said that the pace of global governance reform should be accelerated and defects should be rid off to suit the pace of global development. The international community needs to pay more attention to the voice of developing countries and give them more considerations when discussing the future structure of global governance.

More than 100 governmental officials, scholars and experts from different countries, regions and international organizations attended the forum.
