On June 25, 2014, CCIEE held the 60th Monthly Economic Talk at the Beijing Media Center, under the theme of China’s Energy Production and Consumption Revolution. Mr. Zhang Guobao, Vice Chairman of CCIEE, presided over the meeting.
Wu Yuetao, Assistant to CCIEE Chairman, He Jiankun, former Vice-Principal of Tsinghua University and President of the Low Carbon Economic Research Institute, Han Wenke, President of the Energy Research Institute of NDRC (National Development and Reform Commission), Zhang Tingke, Vice President of Huaneng Group, and Zou Dongtao, President of the Institute of Development and Reform, Central University of Finance and Economics and former Editor-in-chief of Social Sciences Academic Press, gave presentations respectively.
Wu Yuetao gave a brief introduction of the Research Project China’s Energy Production and Consumption Revolution, completed by CCIEE researchers. He pointed out that the pattern of international energy has undergone significant transformation. Economic development requires a large consumption of energy but constraints have to be imposed on energy consumption due to environmental concerns. China’s energy revolution implies that a contemporary energy system should be established, including reduction revolution, increase revolution and efficiency revolution.
He Jiankun stated that China’s energy production and consumption revolution conform to global energy transformation and the trend of low carbon development and is the internal demand of China’s sustainable development. Comparing with advanced countries, China is faced with more formidable challenges and thus, it needs various innovative solutions.
Han Wenke believed that energy revolution means transformation and therefore, energy transformation should be combined with energy production and consumption. Some of the problems in the development of energy industry need to be resolved with great courage.
Zhang Tingke argued that the direction of China’s energy production and consumption revolution is to establish a contemporary energy pattern which is multi-functional and complementary, market-oriented and well-regulated.
Zou Dongtao proposed four goals and five paths for China’s energy production and consumption. Furthermore, he believed that China’s energy production and consumption are important for realizing the Chinese Dream.
