CCIEE Holds 72nd Monthly Economic Talk

On the morning of June 19, 2015, CCIEE held the 72^nd Monthly Economic Talk at the Multifunction Hall, 2F Media Center Beijing. Under the theme of New Model of Sino-US Relationship, the meeting was presided over by Mr. Wei Jianguo, Vice Chair of CCIEE. Mr. Jin Canrong, Deputy Dean of School of International Studies of Renmin University of China, Mr. Yuan Peng, Deputy Director of China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, and Ms. Chen Wenling, Chief Economist of CCIEE, addressed the meeting respectively.

Mr. Jin Canrong held that Sino-US relationship is more complicated than ever, with new problems feeding on old ones. There are three factors that lead to the open-ended future of Sino-US relationship: First, in no way will the two powers plunge themselves into a life-or-death struggle; instead, they have to be mutually accommodating. Second, the two civilizations with unequivocal values can be highly inclusive. Third, the new model of Sino-US relationship is based on the deep-seated ideology of two peace-loving peoples. Therefore, a bilateral strategic partnership is one of the promising possibilities.Mr. Yuan Peng argued that Sino-US relationship is undergoing at least four changes: First, China is quickly closing the gap on US economic and military superiority. Second, China’s rise is diminishing US influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Third, the global issues which have promoted the bilateral cooperation are losing their significance, while the new basis for such cooperation is yet to be identified, leading to the changed strategiccooperation basis. Fourth, Sino-US economic relationship is swayed by the evolving international environment.Ms. Chen Wenling regarded economy as the decisive basis and diplomacy, military power, culture and politics as variables of Sino-US relationship. The present economic ties prove it is more beneficial for the two countries to be friends rather than foes. In her opinion, “co-existence and co-governance, sharing and win-win, joint construction and mutual growth” are the approaches to smooth out ideological differences in the course of building the new model of Sino-US relationship.

At the end of the talk, experts took questions from the audience and media. CCIEE researchers and representatives from member entities of CCIEE, enterprises, institutes and the media attended the meeting.
