First US-China CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue Held in Beijing

On 17th March, 2011, the First US-China CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue was held in Beijing. The participants exchanged their views on issues relating to the US-China economic and trade relations. The dialogue was co-hosted by CCIEE and the US Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Zeng Peiyan, Chairman of CCIEE, Tung Chee-Hwa, Advisor of CCIEE, Mr. Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.  

Mr. Zeng pointed out that in addition to the government-level Strategic and Economic Dialogues, China and the US also need to conduct non-governmental dialogues and exchanges. Through candid and sincere talks, the two sides can eliminate misunderstandings, enhance mutual trust and promote smooth development of the Sino-US economic and trade relations.

Mr. Zeng said that China’s economic development will remain at a fast speed in the next five to ten years, which implies huge potential and business opportunities. China is not only the world factory but also the world market. Both sides should increase their cooperation and investment in areas such as manufacturing, information, infrastructure construction, environmental protection, bio-technology, new energies, aviation and aerospace, smart grid, modern service industry, this will help to reduce the imbalances in the Sino-US trade, promote closer Sino-US trade relations and bring greater benefits to both countries.       

Mr. Zeng also said that China is committed to resolve its own development-related problems, accelerate transferring its economic development mode, safeguard its people’s livelihood and improve their living standard continuously. In terms of global governance, he said more countries need to get involved, they should undertake respective responsibilities and share the fruit of development.    

The participants had in-depth discussions and exchanged their views on topics such as “2011 China,US and world economies”, “improve investment environment in the US and China”, “promote development of the financial sectors in the US and China”, and “enhance technological innovation”. They agreed that non-governmental dialogues also need to be established in order to resolve problems in the Sino-US trade and economic relations, apart from government-level dialogues. The First US-China CEO and Senior Officials’ Dialogue is a good try to provide the US-China CEO and senior officials with a good platform to communicate and exchange their views.
